SHANTZ HALL REHABILITATION

GLHN and Sears Gerbo’s proposal for this comprehensive renovation of a laboratory building at the University of Arizona creates a powerful, serene, and nurturing community environment.

Large scale architectural gestures at the existing building perimeter - the columnar perforated metal screens at the south elevation; the glass volume and solar arrays that join the two buildings, and the north wall brise soleil combine to create a vibrant, contemporary profile for a building whose mid-century structure and volume within remain intact. The south building’s height blocks southern light completely; the east and west boundaries are partially blocked by the elevators shafts located there. As a result, the central space is illuminated largely with reflected light.
